PengYou Privacy Policy

1. About this policy

PengYou is a language-learning service from Definite Labs Inc. Its companion, Meili (美丽), is an AI character. This policy explains the information processed by the PengYou iPhone and iPad app and web app. Lessons and vocabulary review can be used without an account; hosted live AI chat uses an account.

2. Accounts and learning information

When you create an account, our authentication provider, Supabase, processes your email address, password and account identifier. We may also store a display name, learning goal, level, subscription entitlement and daily chat usage counts. We use these records to sign you in, provide your account features, enforce usage limits and support you. Passwords are handled by the authentication service; they are not sent to the AI companion.

Your conversations, saved words, review history, learning progress and settings are stored on your device. Device backups may include local app data, depending on your Apple settings.

3. AI conversations and third-party processing

When you send a live message, your message, relevant conversation history, learning context and instructions are transmitted to Anthropic, the provider of Claude, to generate a reply, translation or correction. Text transcribed from voice input may be included. Our hosted chat service uses Supabase to authenticate and relay requests. Do not include information you do not want processed by these services. Offline scripted demo conversations do not call the live AI service.

For hosted chat in the native app and web app, we store the submitted message, AI reply, account identifier and operational information such as model, request time, usage, errors and latency. We use this information to operate the service, investigate problems, understand product use and improve the learning experience. These records are not published to other learners.

If you choose to configure a personal Anthropic API key in the native app, it is stored in the device keychain and used to authenticate direct requests to Anthropic. Such requests do not pass through our hosted chat log. Anthropic processes requests under its applicable service terms and privacy practices; this policy does not promise that data sent to a provider is immediately erased.

4. Voice, microphone and notifications

Voice input is optional. With your permission, the native app uses Apple speech recognition. Depending on the device, language and Apple service availability, recognition may process audio on the device or through Apple’s servers. The app may save recordings on your device for playback and practice. Our native chat backend sends text, not those saved audio files, to Anthropic.

You can use text input instead and revoke microphone, speech-recognition or notification permission in device Settings. Practice reminders are local notifications. Saved recordings can be managed in the app’s recording controls.

5. Purchases

Apple processes purchases and subscriptions made through the App Store. We receive transaction and entitlement information needed to provide paid access, and may store the subscription expiry with your account. We do not receive your full payment-card details. Manage or cancel App Store subscriptions through your Apple account. Deleting the app or requesting account deletion does not itself cancel a subscription.

6. Service providers and other disclosures

We use service providers to provide authentication, hosting, AI processing, speech features and payments. They receive the information necessary for those functions. Relevant providers include Supabase, Anthropic and Apple. Information may be processed in countries other than where you live, including the United States. We use provider agreements and applicable safeguards for these services.

We do not sell personal information or share it with advertisers for cross-app behavioral advertising. The native apps do not include advertising or a third-party advertising analytics SDK. We may disclose information when required by law or needed to address fraud, security issues or legal claims. If the service changes ownership, information may be transferred as part of that transaction with applicable notice and protections.

7. Retention and deletion

Local learning data remains until you delete it using the app or device controls. Signing out alone does not erase all local learning data. Hosted native-app chat logs have a standard retention period of 180 days. Account, profile, usage and any synchronized progress records are retained while needed to provide your account and service. Limited records may be retained longer when required for legal, security, billing or dispute-resolution purposes; backups may persist until their normal expiration.

In the native app, open Me → Delete account & all data to request removal of your account and associated active server records and clear local learning records. If you cannot access the app, or need help with deletion, email info@definitelabs.app from the address associated with your account and name the app. We may verify your identity before handling an access or deletion request. Apple subscriptions, device backups and records independently held by service providers are managed through those providers.

8. Your choices and privacy requests

You can use offline learning features without live AI chat, stop sending messages, change device permissions, manage subscriptions, and request account deletion. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete personal information, or restrict or object to certain processing. Contact info@definitelabs.app to make a request. We cannot recover information that exists only on your device after you delete it.

9. PengYou on the web

The web app at pengyouchat.com stores conversations, saved words, learning progress and preferences in browser local storage. Signing in does not synchronize this learning history with another browser or the native app. Supabase handles authentication and the shared chat allowance. Live web conversations pass through the same hosted PengYou chat service described above, including its conversation logging.

Optional browser speech recognition may process audio through your browser or its speech-service provider. You can use typed input instead. The web app does not save audio recordings.

The web app uses Google Analytics to measure page and tab visits. Analytics may process cookies or online identifiers and device/browser information. Our page-view events do not include chat text, email addresses, authentication fragments or URL query strings. Google advertising signals and advertising personalization are disabled in the site configuration.

The website is hosted by Vercel, which processes request information such as IP address, browser details, requested URL and access time to deliver and secure the website. This privacy page itself adds no analytics scripts, advertising trackers or sign-up forms.

Clearing browser storage removes local learning data but does not delete your server account or cancel a subscription. Use Settings → Delete all data on this device to clear local browser data, or contact info@definitelabs.app for account or data requests. Manage an existing subscription through the store where you purchased it.

10. Age suitability

The service is intended for learners aged 13 and older, or a higher minimum age where required. It is not directed to children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to us, contact us so we can investigate and arrange deletion. The App Store age rating does not itself verify a user’s age.

11. Policy changes and contact

We may update this policy when the service or its data practices change. The effective date at the top identifies the current version; we will provide additional notice where required.
